Prostheses for lower limbs are made at the Inail Prosthetics Center in Vigrio di Budrio, which can also be used in sports. Something about the world of prosthetics explains to you the Engineer Gennaro Verni, Technical Director of the Center, sitting in front of a photograph by Stefano Lippi, a paralympic athlete who suffered an amputation in his legs due to an accident and thanks to the prosthesis Inail has achieved important results at the world championships and the Paralympics. Inside the Inail Center there is also a gym equipped with various types of paths that allows patients to train themselves to the use of prosthetics.
The prostheses for the lower limbs with electronic control
"The prostheses for the lower limbs currently available - explains the engineer Verni - allow, after suffering an amputation in the legs, to obtain really exceptional performance in the reality ... I speak in this case in particular of the electronically controlled prostheses of both the knee and of the ankle joint. These prostheses now allow the patient who has had an amputation to walk whatever the conditions of the ground and to obtain performance unimaginable until recently. The latest electronically prosthetic leg controlled components even allow you to climb stairs having a specific engine available, to walk without any kind of problem on any terrain ... "
Rehabilitation activity
"We must however take into account - underlines the engineer Verni - that behind this type of prosthesis, especially with high technology, made to compensate for an amputation there is always a specific rehabilitative activity, that is training for the specific use ofprosthetic leg these components. It is in practice the added value that we give to our business and in particular the added value of this structure ".
Amputation and prosthetics, applications in the disabled sport
amputation Even people who have undergone amputation in the lower limbs can do sports.
"A particular branch of prostheses in the lower limbs - says Gennaro Verni - is represented by prostheses for sports activities. These are specific prostheses, that are not prostheses designed primarily for walking, but for practicing the most diverse sports, prosthetic leg from aquatic to alpine ... prostheses that have allowed our athletes, Italian athletes and the Inail Protestant Center, to get in athletics exceptional results at both the Paralympics and World Championships for the disabled. I mean results of the level of gold, bronze and silver medals, unthinkable until a few years ago ".
"This - concludes the Technical Director of the Inail Prosthesis Center - was possible thanks especially to the particular components: the feet to return energy are elastic structures, practically they are carbon fiber springs, which allow you to accumulate a large part of energy due to the load and then return it in the successive phases of the pass. In this case too, they are very specific, specific components designed for the individual athlete ".
A center of excellence to solve the problems due to amputation
We can therefore affirm calmly that even after a serious incident such as that which causes an amputation of a lower limb, at the Inail Prosthesis Center of Vigorso di Budrio, near Bologna, there are professional skills, abilities, skills and technologies able to give back to the person disabled the opportunity to start living and moving like a normal person.
